Normani had to work from home for the 2024 BET Awards.
The Fifth Harmony alum shared that wasn't able to perform at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles for the awards show after injuring her knee in a "really bad accident."
"I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believe me," Normani wrote in a June 30 Instagram Story. "I wanted to get on here and give you guys an update letting you know that while in rehearsals for BET I had a really bad accident and injured myself." And while the 28-year-old would normally be "powering through under any circumstance," she said her medical team wouldn't allow it.
"I desperately wanted to give you by on that stage," she continued, "but performing would delay my healing."
Normani—who also shared a photo of her using crutches and wearing a knee bandage—wanted her fans to know that they won't be alone in their disappointment over her absence, noting that she's been doing her best to "make sense" of her own emotions regarding the accident.
"I am devasted and hate feeling like a disappointment to you," she explained, "but I have to focus on recovering at this time."
The "Motivation" singer added, "Trust me, I hear you, and I see you. There is nothing more that I wanted to do than perform for you and also, get back to doing what fulfills me most-BEING ON STAGE."
Normani's BET performance would have marked her first live show since releasing her album Dopamine earlier this month. But just because she didn't end up taking the stage doesn't mean she won't be cheering on performers Will Smith, Tyla, Shaboozey, Victoria Monét and Sexyy Red, among others.
"Sending my love to BET for giving me and all of the other beautiful black women this opportunity," she closed out her message. "This is definitely NOT how I envisioned this weekend but best believe I will be championing everyone from home tonight."
