A "Happy Gilmore" sequel is in the works, according to one of the original film's stars.
Adam Sandler, who starred in the original sports comedy as the titular character, is involved in the project, according to Christopher McDonald.
McDonald played Happy's nemesis Shooter McGavin in the 1996 film.
McDonald revealed the project during an interview on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland.
"Here's a quick intel," McDonald told host Ken Carman. "I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he says to me 'McDonald. You're going to love this.' I said 'What?' And he says 'How about that?' and he shows me a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2."
The "Hacks" actor then joked that the radio producers should cut his comment out of the interview in case the project did not pan out.
"I don't want to be a liar," he said, "I said that would be awesome. It's in the works. Fans demand it."
What is 'Happy Gilmore' about?
Adam Sandler plays as a professional hockey player named Happy Gilmore who develops a passion for golf. Happy decides to join a golf tournament and win enough money to buy his grandmother's (Frances Bay) home before she loses it.
During the tournament he faces off against arrogant golfer Shooter McGavin, who is threatened by Happy.
"With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, Happy becomes an unlikely golf hero -- much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals," the film's synopsis reads.
When will 'Happy Gilmore 2' come out?
There is no announced release date for "Happy Gilmore 2."
A script has seemingly been written for the sequel based off McDonald's comments but a studio has yet to announce the project.
Deadline reported that film will be for Netflix, where Sandler has a longtime deal. The streamer declined a USA TODAY request for comment.
How to watch 'Happy Gilmore'
"Happy Gilmore" is available to stream with a Starz subscription, Roku Channel subscription or Hulu premium subscription.
It's also rent the film for $3.99 on Google Play or Apple TV.
